How it began: Beyond High-Street Uniformity

Helen had been searching high-street jewellers for a cluster ring for several years, but kept coming away disappointed. Commercial off-the-shelf options were heavily standardized, overly uniform, symmetrical, and lacking distinct architectural character.

She wanted a piece with an organic, fluid arrangement, stones placed with intentional asymmetry that felt like a natural leaf form rather than a rigid geometric grid. Knowing Iain's studio practice, she reached out to see if a custom piece could bridge that gap.

"I had been looking for a few years at the cluster rings that high-street jewellers provided and they were not quite what I was looking for. Right from the outset, I knew I had made the right decision asking for Iain’s help." — Helen

The Process: Collaborative Sketches & Bench Updates

To capture Helen’s vision of a natural, leaf-like silhouette, the process began with exploring multiple structural arrangements. Rather than forcing a single concept, Iain provided several distinct starting layouts, eventually combining the strongest architectural elements from two designs into a unified custom piece.

Because a bespoke commission requires complete trust, Helen received short video updates at every major milestone on the bench:

  • The Arrival: Laying out the gems on the bench to confirm the sizes and shapes.

  • The Setting: Showing the structural precious metal frame take shape before stone setting.

  • The Placement: Precise, individual positioning of each stone inside its dedicated setting

The Reassurance: Uncompromising Quality at the Bench

Building bespoke jewellery requires flexibility. Midway through fabrication, both Iain and Helen independently agreed that one element of the setting wasn't quite matching the intended balance. Without hesitation, Iain rebuilt the setting from scratch to ensure the proportions were flawless.

"At one point we both independently decided the setting wasn't quite right, and Iain just re-did it. It gave me complete confidence that he was just as keen as I was to get it perfect." — Helen

The Result: A Wearable Autobiography

When the finished ring was shipped, Helen sent a live video of her opening the package at home, capturing the exact moment she saw the finished piece in person (for me the moment of excitement and delight seeing it for the first time was the best part of the journey).

"Seeing the videos as the setting was made and stones were placed just built my excitement along the journey... It makes me feel special, and I smile every time I look at my ring. People always comment on its uniqueness." — Helen
