Beyond the 30-Second Reel: Why I’ve Started “The Sandcast Goldsmith” Patreon
If you’ve followed my bench work for a while, you know how much I love sharing the realities of sand casting and working at the bench as a goldsmith and a jeweller, the highs and the lows. There is something mesmerising about packing fine Delft sand, adjusting the torch flame, and making that single, smooth pour into a molten crucible and a piece of wonderful jewellery emerges. Equally there is a sense of achievemnt when something goes wrong the first time but will a little tinkering it works the second or third!
Trying to share a detailed experience on social platforms has felt increasingly like trying to squeeze a masterclass into a 30-second algorithm sprint. That is the primary reason I have begun The Sandcast Goldsmith Patreon.
Creating a Space for Genuine Education
Short videos are great for quick eye candy, but they leave out the details that actually make or break a piece.
Instagram and other social feeds thrive on short content and as a result you dont get to see why a mold failed, how to set up an oxygen-propane torch for clean melts, or how I work on a piece at the benchpeg after casting. On Patreon, I can publish unhurried, full-length bench tutorials and written breakdowns where I can go into the tools, the processes, and (occasionally) troubleshooting a failed piece.
Building a Dedicated Community Outside of Social Feeds
Social media feeds are designed to keep you scrolling, not to build a focused community. I wanted to create a dedicated space away from ads, algorithms, and endless feeds where fellow bench jewellers, makers, and the interested can connect. On Patreon, the comment section becomes a real workshop dialogue where you can ask technical questions and get clear answers.
What to Expect in the Studio
I’ve tried to structure the page to welcome everyone, whether you’re looking to learn the trade or simply follow along with the creative journey:
Free Tier: Public updates, and behind-the-scenes teasers.
Studio Visitor: A small financial support, a cup of coffee a month, to access to the feed, see what is being worked on at the bench, and have someearly looks at sketches and prototypes.
Bench Student: Complete access to full-length bench videos, detailed step-by-step process notes, tool recommendations, and member discussions.
Masterclass Patron (15 spots): Everything the lower tiers have but quarterly one to one zoom sessions and monthly group Q&A zooms.
I hope to use the funding from the Patreon to source new tools, materials, and offset time it takes to record the videos, etc. This will allow me to spend less time trying to beat social media algorithms and more time at the bench producing real, educational content for people who care about the craft.
Currently online there is a tool checklist, a quick run though of my casting the handle of the spade I made for the Desire show at Waterperry Gardens. My next few films will focus on the tools in a bit more detail, why I used certain things, or don’t use others and a more in depth look at mold making.
